Who can name the above band, WITHOUT looking up the song on Google? Winner gets a hug, but we are on the honor system here. And no looking at the other comments before you guess!
We all know each other from our online writing, but how much do we really know each other? What do you picture when you are reading my posts? And, dare I ask, what do you picture when you are reading my wife's posts?
A few of us have even ventured to give our real names (at least first names) to others. Always through email. Always quietly.
I'm the same way, but I don't really know why. The odds that someone would be able to find me if my first name was on here, vs. it not being on here now, are slim. Unless you have a pretty uncommon first name, Tertullian for example, you should be okay. Of course, the flip side is that many of us have seen people get in trouble by not being careful enough.
Well, now its time for me to out the very few people who I do know.
Just kidding, of course.
So here is the game; of the people you read, if you had to guess their real name, what would you guess? For those of you who read hundreds of blogs (FADKOG) just name a few. If you know someones real name, for goodness sake don't out them on here.
I'll give an example:
FADKOG seems like a Stephanie to me.
FTN - definitely a Peter (why did that sound dirty?)
and I would call xi, Mark, if I ever met him
Who sounds like what to you?

Would that be a hug or Hugs!?
Phyllis sounds like a Phyllis to me.
Oh, and I think Christian Husband actually IS Tertullian.
Just don't call me Late To Dinner ....
You KNOW I know the band, and I didn't even have to Google it.
FTN is a huge Peter. Gigantic.
I read hundreds of blogs?! Maybe Stephanie does, but I'm not sure I have that kind of time!
You - Mark
Therese - I know this isn't the case, but she seems very much a Therese
Desmond - John. John or Larry
FADKOG - Stephanie
Phyllis - Same as Therese (or IS she??). I always just think of her as Phyllis.
XI - I think John
Taja - Amanda
I have no idea my basis.
A lot of the other bloggers I read and comment on, I've come to know their real name (by coercian and my wiley ways, thus - I'm sticking with 'Peter'), or they use their real names. In fact, a quick scan of those I read, I pretty much know their actual name.
I am not necessarily adverse to someone knowing my real name, and some people have drugged me and gotten it out of me super fast, but I just figured that when I started the blog, I had no idea what I'd be doing in my life, career-wise or other, at a future point, so why give someone a direct line to my rambling. Which I'm doing now, so it's time to go to bed.
Best Wishes,
Steph
Gosh, FTN, I think Steph just called you a big prick. . .
'Course, I'm not sure that 2/3 of a 'John' is all that complimentary of me, either. . . (But Larry? Uh. . . no)
Now, I know she's not a Marla, but somehow, that name just sticks in my mind for DKG. Or maybe Diane?
And Mark just seems to fit FTN.
I agree w/ Therese - Phyllis is Phyllis. . .
And Therese IS very 'Therese-y', but I know better. . .
I actually think XH is more like a Thaddeus.
And Taja seems like a Diane, too. Or maybe Marianne. . .
And, you might think it terribly pedestrian, but XI is really Xavier Isidore (but that's WAY too Catholic-sounding, isn't it?) ;)
I have no idea re the band, or the song, btw. I tip my hat to the DKG; but then, I basically stopped keeping track once we left the 70s. . .
I keep thinking about the Doors' "Hello, I love you, won't you tell me your name", tho. . .
Or, of course, the Beatles' 'You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)'. . . Of course. . .
I know the band, saw them in concert with The Counting Crows 2 summers ago. Good song.
I thiiiink I know that song... I think it's by the group I always get confused with the Gin Blossoms because I don't generally listen to that type of music. I could be wrong. (But I'm never wrong. ; )
Amanda? Diane? Marianne? How did someone of my stature and exotic title become an AMANDA??? (I'm forcing out some animosity here because my real name is even more boring.)
I think a few people in the blogosphere know my real name (and everyone who regularly reads my blog should know it, if they've paid attention) but I'm thinking about it right now? And I don't know anyones. I feel gypped. Doesn't anyone trust me!?!?
Peter is just good and giant. But not a prick (there's a word I've not used in a long time! I go for 'wang' when looking of an offbeat and kooky way to say penis!)
I opted for John's based on the generations, I think. And the fact that at least one-third of the population is named thusly.
Oh, I think Taja is much more of a Ginger than a Marianne.
And Stephanie, well, my reference point would be the character from "Newheart" and I just think that FADKOG is a lot cooler and less uptight than that.
I think FTN is more of a Richard(Because someone had to say it).
And what exactly does "Therese-y" mean?
Isidore would be a good fit for XI because he's the patron of farmers and gardeners...but I don't think non-Catholics name their kids the same way we do. :)
I actually know a Peter Wang. . .
And a Dick Pease, too. . .
Would everyone please stop calling me a dick?
Strangely enough, I know a lot of names. I mean, at least all the bloggers you mentioned, and all the people that have commented, and a number of others, I suppose. Yet I still always think of them in my mind by their blogger name. It's just how I've come to know them -- I'd hate to get in the habit of addressing them otherwise, or it might slip out at the wrong time.
Besides, quite frankly, most of your real names don't fit you guys AT ALL.
That's it, I'm renaming all of you.
*PS: I'm actually Muhammed.
Oh, as for the song, I wouldn't have guessed Goo Goo Dolls at first. I got Sympathy for the Devil by the Stones stuck in my head instead.
Pleased to meet you, hope you can guess my name...
And when I say,
"I know all of your names,"
what I really mean is,
"In my head, I just refer to all of you as Roger."
baby - if XH came over here anymore, he might be very pleased with being called Tertullian!
xi - you're the cook, so you are NEVER late to dinner!
Stephanie - I thought of that for you because it sounds like an 80's name to me... and although you may have not been BORN in the 80's, you ARE the 80's. In a good way.
I base how many blogs you read by how many comments you get. SO, for you, its like 50 per post. You've become awfully popular! Just don't forget us little people on your rise to the top.
Since you aren't adverse to people knowing, why don't you throw it out RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW?!
Des - so FTN is Peter, Prick, and Dick. I like it. I've seen FADKOG called Marla elsewhere as well, so that name doesn't surprise me. Your name for xi is, as a co-worker would say, "clutch". What is clutch? Clutch is everything.
You named two other great songs. I think, if we ever get together, we should play this song board game that we have. You have two teams, draw a card with a word, and have to go back and forth singing songs that contain that word. Therese and I love it.... FADKOG can play as well!
So Gone - how were they live? I haven't been to many concerts.
Taja - I always confuse them with the Gin Blossoms as well! LOL! I remember seeing your real name on your blog at some point in the past, but for the life of me can't remember. If you become friends with Therese, she likes to give out our names at the drop of a hat...
FADKOG - John is a good safe guess. And I don't know that I've EVER used the word prick, until Desmond (John John) made me.
Sweetie - I get the Newhart reference, but that is certainly NOT who I equated FADKOG to! :)
Des - some things you just cant make up!
FTN - I tend, even when someone knows me and I communicate with them, to use our blogger names. No idea why. I almost accidently used Therese's blogger name with someone who knows us in real life. Caught myself just in time!
Another good "name" song. You can play the song game with Des, FADKOG, and me.
And I don't know where the Roger thing came from, but when I hear that name I think of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15XlSbGzGTk
(sorry I don't know anything about html to make that an actual link.)
Lastly, Because I'm commenting too much: The song is from Goo Goo Dolls...

Well, see, I'm an automotive engineer; 'clutch' is what we do every day. . .
'Therese' is just sorta one of those 'emblematic' Catholic names, what with the saints of both Avila and Lisieux, and all. . .
I know full names for just a few of y'all; first names only for a few more than that. I'm not terribly shy about ID-ing myself 'offline', but here in blog-space, I'd prefer to keep it all pseudonymous. . .
And here is where I get all teasingly cryptic, and say that Therese's real name is the same as one of my daughters, right down to the 'mildly idiosyncratic' spelling. . .
Man Desmond, some people just can't keep a secret .... last time I tell you anything ....
Xavier out
My name is Dooce.
What is Dooce doing slumming around with us?
More related to the post, I am terrible at guessing names. No one really looks like their name. I don't think I look like my name, and I don't think my husband looks like his name. Although both of our names are very common and there are a vast array of people with our names, so it's hard to say. I'm guessing though that there has to be at least one Mark, Sarah, Tim, and Patricia/Patti/Tricia out in here somewhere.
So, uh, Dooce - you decided to drop in on us. . .
I don't like the implication that the rest of us aren't as cool as Dooce. I mean, New York Magazine hasn't mentioned me yet, but they could. :)
So Taja. . .
Susan?
Liz/Beth/Betsy?
or. . . Cindy!
I do a thoughtful post about my wife, 10 comments. This one - at least 26. WTF? :)
Des - you ARE a tease.
xavier - don't go too far! We miss you.
Stephanie - your name should be Lucy.
taja - I know three other bloggers, and none of them have those names. You lose! NO HUG FOR YOU.
Good Lord - so many Dooce jokes.
Fadkog is Irish. I dub her BOOBS McCleavage. We drink Guinness together and chase leprechuans.
But I'm also careful not to keep her out in the sun too long.
If I called my wife "Autumn" in public, she would shoot me.
One of our friends' son/DIL moved back in with them temporarily, and the DIL's name really IS Molly. So, one day, I'm walking thru the kitchen, and there's a note stuck to the fridge about 'Molly something-or-other', and I was all, "wait a minute. . . who knows about Molly?"
And, wouldn't that be BOOBS O'Cleavage?
Late as usual, I know, but I'll chime in anyway.
RS = Jeremy (because sometimes he reminds me of my son)
Therese = Therese
XI = Larry
FadKog = Stephanie is good, but I think I figured out her real name and have always thought of that ever since.
Silent Male = Steve (though I know better)
Bunny = Linda
Taja = Tiffany (Except now I think of her as Hilda.)
Desmond = Russell
And really my name is Pamela. Ok, really that's what my Mom was going to name me.
Phyllis... (or Pamela) My mom wanted to name me Tiffany, but my dad said it sounded like a dogs name. No offense to any Tiffany's out there!
I accidentally posted the correct answer to Thereses' one handed song challenge under the e-mail name of my husband & myself. Not sure if anyone ever caught that...
My name isn't Therese!
Tajalude, you know, I still owe you a song...
FTN - I'm with Des. I like Boobs O'Cleavage.
Des - that Molly thing must have freaked you out!
Phyllis - dang, you got me. And everyone got Therese, it is a good name AND a good alias.
taja - BUSTED.
Sweetie - if you owe taja something, maybe you should stop obsessing with s-e-x and get it going!
Phyllis - Russell was my grandfather's name, and if my uncle hadn't named my cousin Russell first, I probably would've been Russell, too. . . But, no. . .
